Hiking Trails

Mossel Bay with its beautiful mountains and high sea cliffs offers you unique hiking experiences. The St. Blaize Trail is a popular13.5km (6 hour) hike that follows the 30 metre contour along the cliffs westwards from the Cape St. Blaize Lighthouse. It begins at the cave below the Lighthouse, and ends at Dana Bay (you can walk it in either direction), and is marked with the sign of the Oystercatcher

Whale Watching

In the wintertime the Southern Right whales leave the cold waters of the Anartic for the warm waters of the South-African coast. During the time spent in the warm calm waters of Mossel Bay the cow's calf and raise their young close to the shore. This is their mating time and the mating frenzy can often be seen close to shore

Whale season starts in June and expires at the end of November, the peek season is mid July to mid October

Museums

Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to set foot on South African soil at Mossel Bay in 1488. The museum grounds are situated at the very site where he came ashore and made contact with the indigenous people. The Dias Museum Complex encompasses a wealth of places of historical interest, the most famous is the Old Post Office Tree and the fountain where Dias found fresh water.

In the Maritime Museum you may embark a full size replica of the caravel used by Dias more than 500 years ago

Also visit the Hartenbos Museum about the "Afrikaner Great Trek" into the hinterland and the Wash Machine and Iron Museum also in Hartenbos
